‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to scoring with the Basque club

The debut appearance the Spanish forward competed in England, an teenage representing the youth squad against German opponents at the English ground in September 2015, he hit the target. The second time he appeared in British turf, against Sunderland weeks after, he netted. His third outing, against Manchester City not long later, sure enough, he repeated the feat. When he returned to Manchester to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in that year, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, also. “Actually,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they substituted him.

“I got well angry,” the Athletic striker admits, before breaking into laughter. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They didn’t let me play the latter period: I was without a signed my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Man United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain the validity, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; post-session, the short journey to Loiu and another flight to England, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words lights him up. It has become a challenging campaign for the team, partly because of the requirements of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. But, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.

In the 36 months since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary flanked by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are unique and debuting in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.

He considered it difficult enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured the coach, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of his career.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but with every stage you advance through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I tear my cruciate.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a turning point because it made me change the outlook. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”

Game time is essential. The striker moved in tears in that year, aged 23, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
